Closer Than You Think

I almost didn’t go…

It had been a long day. Nothing out of the ordinary, just the kind of day that stacks up. Work, responsibilities, a hundred small things pulling in different directions. By the time I had a window, it didn’t feel like enough time to do anything meaningful.

Then my daughter asked if we could go to the forest and watch the sunset.

It wasn’t a great time for it. It meant getting back in the truck, making the drive, rearranging the rest of the night. Everything in me wanted to say, not today.

But instead, we went.

It’s about a 45-minute drive to the Ouachita National Forest. Nothing crazy, but just far enough to feel like a commitment when the day’s already been full. We made it just as the sun was starting to drop, right at that window where everything slows down whether you’re ready for it or not.

We finally arrived to the small parking area at Flatside Pinnacle, and my wife, daughter, and two boys jumped out of the 4Runner, eager to make the short hike to the top of the mountain.

At first, my mind was still moving at the same pace it had all day, thinking about what needed to get done, what I hadn’t finished, and what was waiting when we got back.

But little by little, something shifted.

The noise started to fade. Not all at once, but enough to notice. The kind of quiet you don’t realize you’ve been missing until you finally hear it again.

Step by step, everything slowed down.

And standing there, watching the sun drop through the trees, it hit me—

I didn’t need to go far to find this.

The perspective I’d been missing all day…
was right here.

I think a lot of us believe adventure is somewhere else.

Somewhere bigger.
Somewhere farther.
Somewhere we’ll get to when we finally have the time.

And those places are real. They matter. I’ve been to some of them, and they’ve shaped me in ways I won’t forget.

But more often than not, the thing we’re actually looking for isn’t out there in the distance.

It’s just outside the noise.

That evening didn’t change my schedule. It didn’t solve every problem waiting on me when I got back. But it did something just as important, it reset the scale.

The world felt bigger again.
Everything else felt smaller.

And for a little while, that was enough.

That idea has always been at the core of Within Reach Outdoor.

Not that big adventures don’t matter, but that they aren’t the starting point.

The starting point is simpler than that.

A trail.
A decision.
A step outside.

You don’t need much.

Over time, the adventures grow. You go farther. You prepare more. You take on things that require planning and effort and intention. Those moments are part of the story too.

But they’re not where it begins.

It begins with realizing that what you’ve been looking for might not be far away at all.

It might be closer than you think.

That’s where a lot of what we create comes from.

The idea of wearing your adventure… not as something you have to earn by doing something extreme, but as something that starts the moment you step outside and see things differently.

The gear doesn’t make the adventure.
It just goes with you.

Because sometimes the most important step isn’t going farther, It’s just going.

And as you go… realizing that you never needed to go that far in the first place.

Unreached ≠ unreachable.

Notes from an Outsider is a monthly release—not of products, but of perspective.

These are short reflections shaped by time outside. Moments of clarity found away from the noise. Thoughts that come from stepping back far enough to see forward more clearly. So this is an open invitation—to ourselves and to the Within Reach community—to take those outsider moments seriously. To get outside. To reflect. To let those moments shape how we live, work, create, and pursue adventure.

Because perspective changes everything.

And sometimes, the best way to find your place…
is to step outside.

Unreached ≠ Unreachable.
